Glossary of Roulette Terms

A Cheval - The game of roulette is, above all, very much French so expect some of the terms to be in French as well. A Cheval simply means a split bet or choosing two out of 36 numbers; if your bet wins, have fun with your 18:1 payoff!

European Wheel - Try your best to play only the European wheel as much as possible because it has a lower house advantage with only one zero in the wheel.

Bankroll - This refers to the number of chips or corresponding amount of money that a player intends or sets aside to use for the game. Do try to have a moderate sized bankroll at all times so that you can make bigger bets when you’re enjoying a lucky streak.

Big Number - If the roulette turns out to have a big number, this means that the wheel is experiencing mechanical failures and causing the ball to hit on a number more frequently than it should.

Choppy Game - When you’re playing roulette and you nor the house have been winning consistently, that’s what you call a choppy game.

Credit Line - This is the amount of credit provided to you by the casino to enable you to continue playing even when you’ve run out of money.

Dead Table - A dead table is when the roulette wheel is ready to be spun and yet there are no players around to play. We recommend you to play in a dead table if you hate distraction.

En Prison - Only the European wheels allow for en prison. When you bet that an even number will come up next the ball lands on a zero, your bet will be “captured”. If the next spin, the ball does land on an even number, you lose half of your bet.

Flat Bettor - A flat bettor is one who doesn’t change the size of his bet – ever!

Quarter Bet - You choose 4 out of 36 numbers and hope that one of those numbers will be where the ball lands.

Session - A session is when the time a player pre-determines he’d spend playing the game.

Take Down - This refers to the act of recalling your bet before the wheel stops spinning.
